Computer Lab Management Makes Surplus Equipment Available
As part of an effort to increase the useful life of computer equipment retired from computer labs, Lab Management transferred (167) pieces of equipment to (15) departments throughout the campus in the summer of 2001. The list of equipment transferred, at no cost, includes four high-speed printers and (146) computers with monitors. The equipment is between three and five years old and has served most of its life in highly utilized public computer rooms. Lab Management typically retires equipment at the end of its third year of service to keep technology current in its (15) computer classrooms, open access labs, and media rooms. Other departments often send requests for the surplus equipment to replace much older equipment in their departments or augment their existing inventory.
In addition (91) pieces of equipment were dispatched to the Bargain Barn as there was not an interest from university departments. Since the University, Office of the President prevents Computer Lab Management from transferring surplus equipment directly to local schools and, or non-profit organizations, the Bargain Barn notifies such entities of availability in their sales process. After lengthy investigation for a means to do this directly, CLM has determined the best course of action is to utilize the mechanism of the Bargain Barn for this process.
Equipment identified to be transferred to the Bargain Barn during the month of August 2002 are quantity (70) iMacs, and (30) Dell GX-1 Towers.
