Lab Management Submits a Proposal to Charge for Printing
Lab Management has submitted a proposal to charge for printing. That
proposal is being evaluated by an advisory committee, the Academic Computing
Coordinating Council (AC4). The council has faculty as well as student
representatives as members. A proposal was submitted due to the increasing
amount of printing each quarter. The amount is rapidly approaching 2 million
pages printed each quarter or roughly 6 million pages per year. We are
awaiting their final approval on our proposal.
Though printing is free for students, the costs of paying for printing has
been absorbed by the Lab Management group. The unit does not receive any
additional funding to compensate for the rise in printing. Funds were
diverted from several areas such as computer lab renovation projects and new
equipment acquisition.
A per page printing charge may be put into effect as early as Summer 2001.
The proposal includes a provision for a set limit of free pages a student
can print before being charged. These charges are intended primarily to
encourage students to print responsibly.
